Softball Recap: Willcox Picks Up Third Consecutive Victory

While Willcox's victory against Morenci wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Willcox had just enough and edged out Morenci 17-16 on Thursday. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 10-0 two weeks ago.

Layla Donahue was incredible, going 3-for-6 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. That home run marked the first that she launched this season. Another player making a difference was Janelle Vandermeulen, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-5.

Donahue wasn't the only one working in the home run department: Willcox lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since back in April of 2024.

The win was the third in a row for Willcox, bringing their record up to 10-7. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to strikeouts: they averaged an imposing 7.67 strikeouts in those games compared to only 3.86 in the others. As for Morenci, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-7 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Willcox will challenge Santa Cruz Valley at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Willcox's pitchers better be ready for this one: Santa Cruz Valley has averaged an impressive 10 runs per game this season. As for Morenci, they will head out to take on Empire at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Empire will roll in looking for their 15th straight victory, something Morenci surely won't give up without a fight.
