Baseball Recap: Springport Drops Highest Score of Season Against Athens

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Springport). They were the clear victors by a 15-9 margin over the Athens Indians on Saturday. The victory was familiar territory for the Spartans, who have now won three matches in a row.

Gavin Lightner was incredible, going 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI. That home run was his first of the season. Gibson Overweg was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.

They weren't the only ones working in the home run department: Springport lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.

Springport's win bumped their record up to 9-2. As for Athens, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-12.

Coming up, Springport will be playing in front of their home fans against Homer at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Spartans are facing the Trojans at the right time seeing as the Trojans are stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Athens, they will head out on the road to challenge Burr Oak at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bobcats have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11.13 runs per game on average), something the Indians will no doubt try to take advantage of.
