Basketball Recap: Godby Now 7-1 over Last Eight Games

Godby lost to Madison County back in January, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Thursday. The Godby Cougars came out on top against the Madison County Cowboys by a score of 62-55. Given the Cougars' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 147th, while the Cowboys are ranked 334th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Godby to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kenijah Clayton, who went 7 for 15 on her way to 19 points and three steals. Clayton is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last seven games she's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Aniyah Lewis, who posted 13 points in addition to eight rebounds and six steals.

Godby smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 15 offensive boards in seven consecutive matches.

Several Cowboys players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jahlaya Wilson, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 11 boards. Another player making a difference was Tahj Dobson, who had ten points in addition to eight rebounds and three steals.

Godby is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.9 points per game. As for Madison County, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-5.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Godby will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Ribault at 6:00 p.m. on January 3, 2025. As for Madison County, they will head out to square off against Fort White at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. That game will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Ya'Zuri Hollie and Dobson.
