Basketball Recap: Willcox Snaps Six-Game Streak of Wins at Home

It was a good run, but Willcox unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Thursday. The match between them and the Morenci Wildcats didn't end well, with the Willcox Cowboys falling 61-42. While losing is never fun, the Cowboys can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 248th, while the Wildcats are ranked 95th).

When it comes to explaining why Willcox lost, don't look at Caden Hooper. Despite the final result, he went 9 of 16 on his way to 19 points and three blocks. Hooper is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last seven games he's played. Da'Marion Jackson was another key player, putting up no points along with eight rebounds and three blocks.

Even though they lost, Willcox smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in three consecutive games.

Morenci's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Abraham Cortez, who posted 18 points. Cortez is trending in the right direction considering he's improved his point production for four straight games. Another player making a difference was Noah Chavez, who earned 14 points.

Willcox's defeat ended a six-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 10-9. As for Morenci, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 19-3 record this season.

Willcox has already played their next match, a 61-52 loss against Tombstone on the 24th. As for Morenci, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 59-47 victory against Benson on the 28th.
