Basketball Recap: Aniece Lewis' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Laney over New Hanover

Laney lost against New Hanover back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Laney Buccaneers took a 34-25 hit to the loss column at the hands of the New Hanover Wildcats. That's two games in a row now that the Buccaneers have lost by exactly nine points.

Laney lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Aniece Lewis, who posted nine points and four steals. Lewis is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. Piper Conklin was another key player, putting up four points and seven boards.

Even though they lost, Laney smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in three consecutive matchups.

Brianna Stanley was her usual excellent self, going 7 of 17 on her way to 21 points in addition to five rebounds and five steals for New Hanover. That's the most points Stanley has posted since back in February of 2024.

Laney has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 11-9 record this season. As for New Hanover, their victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-6.

Coming up, Laney will be playing at home against North Brunswick at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Laney is facing North Brunswick at the right time seeing as North Brunswick is stuck on a seven-game losing streak. As for New Hanover, they have already played their next contest, a 54-23 win against Kinston on the 8th.
