First Flight hasn't had much luck against Currituck County recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Nighthawks will take on the Knights at 6:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (First Flight has seven straight victories, Currituck County has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
First Flight had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Pasquotank County last Thursday. The Nighthawks' pitcher stepped up to hand the Panthers a 10-0 shutout. The Nighthawks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven contests by ten runs or more this season.
Molly Richards and Kylie Vann did most of the damage at the plate: Richards went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Vann went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Avery Winslow also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, Currituck County lost 17-1 to Nansemond-Suffolk Academy on Friday.
Currituck County saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Amelia Cervantes, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
First Flight pushed their record up to 10-3 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.8 runs over those games. As for Currituck County, their loss dropped their record down to 11-11.
Tuesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. First Flight has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .447. However, it's not like Currituck County struggles in that department as they've averaged .488. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
First Flight came up short against Currituck County in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, falling 10-5. Can the Nighthawks avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
