Sherwood remains the team to beat, but also watch out for Perryville, Northern, St. Mary's Ryken and Chopticon in the Maryland softball #MaxPrepsFab5.

2017 Maryland Preseason Softball Fab 5, presented by the Army National Guard

1. Sherwood (Sandy Spring)

2016 record: 20-0
Head coach: Ashley Barber-Strunk

The Warriors nabbed the Maryland Class 4A state championship last season and finished as the No. 12 team in the Xcellent 25 National Softball Rankings. Sherwood has won five straight state titles and owns a 103-game winning streak. Amanda Berkley should be a force at the plate after recording 23 RBIs and nine doubles.

2. Perryville
2016 record: 22-0
Head coach: James Dugan

Perryville went undefeated and claimed its first Maryland Class 1A state title last year. Sophomore Jordyn Reese should have a huge year after tallying the game-tying RBI and scoring the winning run in last season's state championship game.

3. Northern (Owings)
2016 record: 20-2
Head coach: Robert Earl Radford

Northern racked up 20 wins and reached the third round of the Maryland Class 3A state playoffs last season. Lauren Daugherty will spearhead the offensive attack after notching 27 RBIs and four homers.

4. St. Mary's Ryken (Leonardtown)
2016 record: 21-2
Head coach: James Sewell

The Knights attained 21 victories and fell in the WCAC championship game last year. Gardner-Webb commit Katie Prebble will be tough to neutralize after smashing six homers with 42 RBIs.

5. Chopticon (Morganza)
2016 record: 20-5
Head coach: Kevon Cioppa

Chopticon reached the Maryland Class 4A state final last year. Haley Hands should head the offensive charge after batting .327 with 21 RBIs. Pitcher Jolie Rawlings will commandeer the circle after posting a spotless 4-0 record with a 1.56 ERA.
