Mt. Vernon proved they can win big on Tuesday (they won by seven) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Fair Grove Eagles 5-3. The win continues a trend for the Mountaineers in their matchups with the Eagles: they've now won eight in a row.

Emily Schubert spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits and racked up seven Ks.

At the plate, Mt. Vernon's victory was truly a team effort as seven different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Maddie Schubert, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Mt. Vernon pushed their record up to 20-5 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Fair Grove, with the defeat, they broke their 11-game winning streak and moved their record to 13-3.

Mt. Vernon and Fair Grove should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Missouri Rankings. The Mountaineers (ranked fifth) will meet Sarcoxie (ranked 47th) at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Fair Grove will take on Ash Grove at 5:00 p.m. on Monday with a big rank advantage (3 vs. 56).
