Softball Recap: Wilkes Central Starts off Right with Win over Elkin

Wilkes Central took care of business in their home opener (barely) on Friday. They skirted past the Elkin Buckin' Elks 6-5. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Eagles as it put an end to their 12-game losing streak dating back to last season.

Peyton Billings spent all five innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up 11 Ks. Those 11 strikeouts gave her a new career-high.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Mackenzie Jenkins, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Elkin's loss dropped their record down to 0-2.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Elkin beat Wilkes Central by a score of 6-5 later that day.
