Basketball Recap: Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders vs. Sanderson Spartans
The Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders entered their tilt with the Sanderson Spartans with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. Cardinal Gibbons came out on top against the Spartans by a score of 46-34 on Tuesday. Given Cardinal Gibbons' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 140th, while the Spartans are ranked 484th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Cardinal Gibbons found their leader in underclassman Tessa Gladieux, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds. Gladieux has been hot recently, having posted two or more blocks the last seven times she's played. Another player making a difference was Mya Lemons, who scored 17 points.
Despite the loss, Sanderson still got an impressive performance from Summer Haith, who scored 21 points along with seven rebounds. Haith is trending in the right direction, as she's improved her point production for four games straight. The team also got some help courtesy of Abby Stephens, who scored four points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Sanderson struggled to work together and finished the game with only two assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Cardinal Gibbons racked up 15 assists.
Cardinal Gibbons' victory was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-7. As for Sanderson, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost seven of their last eight games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-15 record this season.
Coincidentally, the pair will both be playing Enloe the next time they take the court. Cardinal Gibbons will head out to face the Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, while the Spartans will head out to face them at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
