Softball Recap: Straughn Comes Up Short

After soaring to 15 runs the game before, Straughn was a bit more limited in their contest on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Opp Bobcats by a score of 2-1. The Tigers were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Bobcats earlier this season, when they won 7-1.

Jaycee Norton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on five hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Straughn saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sophie Pettus, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run. Pettus is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played.

Straughn's defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 20-7-1. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only 1.33 runs. As for Opp, their victory bumped their record up to 13-14.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Straughn will square off against New Brockton at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Gamecocks have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 14.93 runs per game on average), something the Tigers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Opp, they will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Pike County at 4:30 p.m.
