Softball Recap: Wheeler's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Thursday

Wheeler dropped their record down to 17-6 on Thursday, which also ended the team's six-game streak of wins. They came up short against the Westville Blackhawks, falling 9-2. Having soared to a lofty 16 runs in the game before, the Bearcats couldn't push the score so high this time.

Cadence Piunti was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one double.

In other batting news, Nora Howell made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

As for Westville, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 14-5. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matchups by seven runs or more this season.

Like Wheeler, Westville also got a great game from a two-way player: Kierstin Vargas. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits (and not a single walk). Vargas was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double.

In other batting news, Miranda Sparks and Maddison Cole did most of the damage at the plate: Sparks went 4-for-5 with three runs and two doubles, while Cole went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That's the most RBI Cole has posted over her last ten contests. Kiersten Vaughan was another key player, going 3-for-5 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Wheeler has already played their next game (against Highland), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Westville, they have also already played their next match, a 10-0 win against Whiting on the 23rd.
