High school volleyball rankings: Marymount climbs in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 following Durango Fall Classic triumph

Sailors overcame crowded field at Durango that included 14 teams in this week's rankings.

No. 2 Marymount (Los Angeles, Calif.) moved up one spot in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school volleyball rankings after its title at the 30th annual Durango Fall Classic. The Sailors beat No. 3 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) with a a comeback 2-1 victory after dropping the first set. 

Samantha Destler was named tournament MVP while Katelyn Oerlemans, Makenna Barnes and Olivia Penske earned all-tournament honors.

Marymount won its pool Friday and then beat 'Iolani (Honolulu, Hawaii) in the qualifying round before handling No. 7 Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, Calif.) 2-0 and reverse-sweeping No. 4 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) in a rematch of last year's championship match.

Sierra Canyon won the first set of the title match 25-21 but Marymount caught fire in the second and snowballed to 25-15 and 25-12 wins and a second event title for the Los Angeles school. The two league rivals meet again Sept. 29 and Oct. 7. Further installments could materialize in the postseason.

Mater Dei and Marymount also might get a chance to reprise their semifinal match in this week's Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Ariz. 



The biggest jump in this week's rankings belongs to Marist (Chicago, Ill.), which climbed eight spots to No. 9. The RedHawks won their Friday pool before upending No. 11 Cornerstone Christian (San Antonio, Texas) in qualifying. 

Marist would fall in three sets to Mater Dei and two to Redondo Union, finishing tied for seventh overall with No. 10 Assumption (Louisville, Ky.).

No. 1 Byron Nelson (Trophy Club, Texas) has won 67 in a row. The defending MaxPreps National Champions have nine regular-season matches remaining.

The trio of Kylie Kleckner (314 kills), Ashlyn Seay (307 kills) and Sophee Peterson (823 assists) has led Byron Nelson for two seasons as it looks for back-to-back state titles.

All-tournament nod Tessa Larkin had 41 kills Saturday at Durango while Vivian Hickman had 37 assists.

6. Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.)

Penn State-bound Finley Krystkowiak was an all-tournament pick for the Falcons as coach Brennan Dean picked up his 400th win during the event.

7. Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, Calif.)

The Sea Hawks beat No. 14 Archbishop Mitty 25-22, 23-25, 29-27 in an epic qualifying round battle. Abby Zimmerman was named to the Durango all-tournament team.

8. Carroll (Fort Wayne, Ind.)

Bailey Sinish had 13 kills and seven digs in a sweep over Bellmont (Decatur) as Elli Oskey added 13 kills and Sophia Gisslen tossed up 40 assists.

9. Marist (Chicago, Ill.)

Libero Elayna Davidson earned Durango all-tournament honors.

10. Assumption (Louisville, Ky.)
Record: 21-5 | Last week: 12
Emily Keiran impressed as the Rockets went 6-2 overall at Durango and showed off their stellar defense. Brooke Codey earned all-tournament honors.

11. Cornerstone Christian (San Antonio, Texas)

Record: 28-5 | Last week: 6
The Warriors won the Silver Division title, beating No. 12 Harrisburg 19-25, 25-23, 25-18. Junior Breya Dawson was named all-tourney.

12. Harrisburg (S.D.)
Record: 11-2 | Last week: 14
The Tigers showed out in Vegas, winning a pre-Durango match in a sweep over Marymount before going 5-2 overall for the tournament. The loss to Torrey Pines in the qualifying round snapped the nation's longest winning streak at 87.

13. Alpharetta (Ga.)

Sophomore Leilani Lamar had 17 kills while seniors Kennedi White and Stephanie Payne added 16 and 10 kills, respectively, in a five-set win over 21-4 North Forsyth (Cumming).

14. Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.)

The Monarchs beat No. 23 Skyview to take third in the Silver Division at Durango.

15. Divine Savior Holy Angels (Milwaukee, Wis.)

The Dashers went 7-0 over the weekend to win the Charger Challenge.

16. Mother McAuley (Chicago, Ill.)

The Mighty Macs dropped their first match of the season, 2-1, to Loyola Academy (Wilmette). Peyton Heatherly had 12 assists and six kills in the match.

17. Hamilton Southeastern (Fishers, Ind.)
Record: 15-2 | Last week: 15
The Royals bounced back from a 2-1 loss to Plainfield with sweeps of Fishers and New Castle. They tangle with No. 20 Roncalli on Tuesday.

18. Benet Academy (Lisle, Ill.)

The lone loss is to Lockport a the end of August and the Redwings have only dropped one set since.

19. Calvary Christian (Clearwater, Fla.)

Sophia Puleo had 18 kills, Sam Karjala added 14 and freshman Maya Talley chipped in 10 in a 3-1 win over Carrollwood Day (Tampa).

20. Roncalli (Indianapolis, Ind.)

Lydia Stahley had 15 kills and Lily Jones added 12 in a five-set victory over Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory (Indianapolis) on Sept. 16. Freshman Norah Bell had 28 assists.

The Lions grabbed five wins and the Lovett Block Party title over the weekend.

Kentucky commit Bellamie Beus showed what the No. 3 Wildcats are getting next season with an impressive weekend at Durango. She helped the Hawks to a fourth-place finish in the Silver Division.

The Mustangs went 4-3 at Durango, finishing with a win in their final match over previously-ranked Cathedral Catholic (San Diego). All seven losses are to teams that are in or have spent time in the MaxPreps Top 25.

The Aztecs went 4-2 at Durango, finishing tied for fifth in the Silver Division including a win over previously-ranked 'Iolani.
