Baseball Game Preview: North Providence Cougars vs. West Warwick Wizards

The North Providence Cougars will challenge the West Warwick Wizards at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. North Providence will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.

If North Providence beats West Warwick with four runs on Monday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two games with that exact score. The Cougars never let Pilgrim get on the board and left with a 4-0 victory on Saturday.

The result came thanks to Vin Pontarelli's shutout, as he gave up just four hits.

On the hitting side, North Providence saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mike Ryan, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.

Meanwhile, West Warwick had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. They came out on top against Toll Gate by a score of 5-0.

Anthony Burt made a big impact no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over 4.1 innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jair Blanco, who scored two runs and stole five bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Those two runs gave him a new career-high.

North Providence's record now sits at 3-0. As for West Warwick, their win was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 1-0.

North Providence couldn't quite get it done against West Warwick when the teams last played back in May of 2019 as they fell 8-5. Can the Cougars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
