Baseball Game Preview: Waco Lions vs. University Trojans

The Waco Lions will challenge the University Trojans at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Waco's hitters haven't had much luck over their past three contests, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Waco fell victim to Lake Belton and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They lost 12-0 to the Broncos.

Meanwhile, University got the win against Ellison on Friday by a conclusive 19-2. Considering the Trojans have won eight matchups by more than nine runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

D'Angelo Alvarado made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. What's more, he posted two strikeouts, the most he's had since back in February. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing three bases while going 2-for-3. He has become a key player for University: the team is 7-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 6-7 otherwise.

In other batting news, University got a massive performance out of Carlos Perez, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. The Trojans are 8-1 when Perez posts two or more runs, but 5-7 otherwise. Anthony Galvan was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one double.

University was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .458. They are 9-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

University is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 12 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.1 runs over those games. As for Waco, their loss dropped their record down to 4-9.

Waco suffered a grim 12-6 defeat to University in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Lions avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
