Softball Game Preview: Newton South Lions vs. East Boston Jets

Newton South is a perfect 4-0 against East Boston since May of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Lions will square off against the Jets at 4:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Newton South took a loss when they played away from home last Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. They were the clear victors by an 18-3 margin over Waltham. The result was nothing new for the Lions, who have now won six games by seven runs or more so far this season.

Meanwhile, East Boston made easy work of Somerville on Thursday and carried off a 22-16 win. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Jets' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.

Newton South has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.8 runs over those games. As for East Boston, their win ended an 11-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 5-7.

Newton South took their victory against East Boston when the teams last played back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 20-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Lions since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
