Baseball Recap: Coast Union Comes Up Short

Coast Union had lost three straight at home, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 6-4 to make it four. They fell just short of the Orcutt Academy Spartans by a score of 5-3. The Broncos were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Spartans earlier this season, when they won 9-7.

As for Orcutt Academy, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 5-10. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since March 11th.

For Orcutt Academy's part, Nick Grindy was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits (and not a single walk). Grindy also tossed no walks, which is notable because Orcutt Academy is 3-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 2-9 otherwise. Grindy was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one double. That double was his first of the season.

Grindy wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Josue Ramirez, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base. Daniel Meraz also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Looking ahead, Coast Union will square off against San Luis Obispo Classical Academy at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The Grizzlies have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12 runs per game on average), something the Broncos will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Orcutt Academy, they will take on Santa Maria at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Saints have averaged an impressive 6.8 runs per game this season.
