Basketball Recap: Ky'jaun Mccutcheon's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Desert Sunrise over Cortez

Desert Sunrise lost against Cortez back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Desert Sunrise Golden Hawks lost 67-41 to the Cortez Colts. While losing is never fun, the Golden Hawks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 274th, while the Colts are ranked 90th).

Desert Sunrise lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Ky'Jaun Mccutcheon, who posted 14 points. That was a full 34.1% of Desert Sunrise's points, marking the 13th time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Savieon Terry, who put up 11 points.

Cortez's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Nygel Lindsey led the charge by dropping a double-double on 16 points and 17 rebounds. The dominant performance gave Lindsey a new career-high in boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Cassius Henderson, who went 6 of 10 on his way to 15 points.

Desert Sunrise is on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-19. As for Cortez, their win was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Desert Sunrise will head out to square off against Tempe at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Cortez, they are taking a road trip to face off against Washington at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
