Baseball Recap: Orono Takes a Loss

Orono extended their losing streak to three on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 5-8 in the process. They lost 13-3 to the Washington Academy Raiders. If the Riots were looking for revenge after losing 7-3 to the Raiders when the teams met back in May of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Orono saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Andrew Barrett, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Zach Ryder was another, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

As for Washington Academy, the win was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record up to 12-1. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 games by six runs or more this season.

On Washington Academy's side, James Welch made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing six innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits. Welch was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played.

In other batting news, Washington Academy got a massive performance out of Daniel Gardner, who got on base in all five of his plate appearances with four stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI Gardner has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Colby Moholland, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Orono will challenge rival Central at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Washington Academy is set to take on their familiar foe Bucksport at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
