Softball Recap: Covington Academy Starts Season with Victory Against Trinity Prep

Covington Academy gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Thursday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-5 victory over the Trinity Prep Lions. The Bulldogs have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Lions, too.

Bryleigh Bragg spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and one unearned) runs on five hits and racked up 17 Ks.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Makenzie Cowan, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in hits (four). Sydney Ellis was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one home run and two runs.

Covington Academy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .472. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Trinity Prep only posted a batting average of .250.

Looking ahead, Covington Academy will square off against Skipstone Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. This will be Skipstone Academy's first chance to prove their worth in the conference. As for Trinity Prep, a feisty cat fight will be fought as the Lions challenge the Panthers at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Trinity Prep is coming into the match on a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season.
