Basketball Recap: Madison Takes a Loss

Madison was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their sixth straight loss. They were beaten by the Churchill Chargers 83-34. While losing is never fun, the Mavericks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 928th, while the Chargers are ranked 43rd).

Madison's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sophia Campa, who posted eight points and nine rebounds. Another player making a difference was Sophia Alejandro, who put up five points and eight rebounds.

Even though they lost, Madison smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. This was only their 11th loss (out of 14 games) when they hit their own glass that hard.

It was another big night for Rakiya Nelson, who went 10 of 15 on her way to 23 points and five steals for Churchill. That's the most steals Nelson has posted since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Daphne Zuniga, who went 6 of 12 on her way to 16 points and three steals.

Madison's record now sits at 4-17. As for Churchill, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-5.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Madison will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Reagan at 11:00 a.m. on December 31st. Churchill also won't see the court for a while: their next game is against Clark at 10:00 a.m. on December 31st. One thing working in Churchill's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last 13 matches.
