Softball Recap: Griffith Institute's Victory on Wednesday Extends Winning Streak to Three

Griffith Institute waltzed into their matchup on Wednesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They were the clear victors by a 16-4 margin over the Tonawanda Timberwolves. The Griffins might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six contests by six runs or more this season.

Olivia Mesch made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed six innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Grace Ricci, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with five runs, two stolen bases, and one triple. Those five runs gave her a new career-high. Mia Rogers was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run.

Griffith Institute always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .650. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Griffith Institute's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-3. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Tonawanda, they are on an eight-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-6.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Griffith Institute will host Cleveland Hill at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Golden Eagles have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 16.8 runs per game on average), something the Griffins will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Tonawanda, they will be playing at home against Kennedy at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
