Baseball Recap: Sunset Takes a Loss

If Sunset was riding high fresh off their 18-2 takedown of Jefferson last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Sunset fell just short of the Hillcrest Panthers by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday. The Bison haven't had much luck with the Panthers recently, as the team has come up short the last seven times they've met.

Edwin Chavez was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He struck out seven batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Angel Echavarria stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: he went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Josue Martinez, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI.

Even though they lost, Sunset hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most four strikeouts in five consecutive contests.

Sunset's defeat dropped their record down to 13-9. As for Hillcrest, their win was their 17th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 14-5-1.

While Sunset had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
