Preview: Pearl Pirates vs. Germantown Mavericks
Pearl is 7-2 against Germantown since December of 2015, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Wednesday. The Pearl Pirates' road trip will continue as they head out to face the Germantown Mavericks at 12:00 p.m. on December 27th. Pearl will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Mississippi Rankings (they are ranked 200th, while Germantown is ranked 38th).
On December 7th, Pearl was the victim of a rough 38-16 loss at the hands of Florence. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Pearl has scored all season.
Meanwhile, Germantown waltzed into their contest Thursday with four straight wins but they left with five. They blew past Olive Branch, posting a 77-43 victory on the road. Germantown's offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.
Ayla Benson was on fire: she went 8 for 10 from beyond the arc en route to 30 points and 2 assists. Those 30 points set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Charlie Gamberine, who scored 16 points.
Pearl bumped their record down to 2-7 with that loss, which was their fourth straight on the road. As for Germantown, their win bumped their record up to 8-5.
Pearl didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Germantown when the teams last played back in January of 2022, but they still walked away with a 45-41 victory. Will Pearl repeat their success, or does Germantown have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
