Baseball Game Preview: Fruita Monument Wildcats vs. Durango Demons

For the second straight game, Fruita Monument will face off against Durango. The Wildcats will look to defend their home field on Saturday against the Demons at 12:00 p.m.

Fruita Monument took a loss when they played away from home on Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They walked away with a 7-4 win over Durango.

Jhett Wells was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has become a key player for Fruita Monument: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most two hits, but 6-7 otherwise. Wells was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and one double. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Jimmy Hawkins and Gavin Cardoza did most of the damage at the plate: Hawkins went 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base, while Cardoza went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Hawkins is becoming a predictor of Fruita Monument's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 4-8 when he doesn't). Josh Weaver was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs.

Fruita Monument was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .379. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Durango only posted a batting average of .192.

Durango's defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-5. As for Fruita Monument, the victory got them back to even at 8-8.
