Softball Recap: Wilby Takes a Loss

Wilby extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 15 on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 0-12 in the process. They came up short against the St. Paul Catholic Falcons, falling 16-1. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Wildcats of the 17-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

As for St. Paul Catholic, they pushed their record up to 11-1 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten games by seven runs or more this season.

For St. Paul Catholic's part, Harley Emmendorfer made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Emmendorfer has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Peighton Giambra looked comfortable as she struck out six batters over two innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit.

Back at the plate, Breyona Demora was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. Those three runs gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Lauren Kozlak, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Wilby will challenge rival Kennedy at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Meanwhile, St. Paul Catholic is set to face off against their familiar foe Holy Cross at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Falcons 3, the Crusaders 4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
