Softball Recap: Highland Drops Highest Score of Season Against Mascoutah

Highland had lost 12 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 4-20 to make it 13. They took a 13-8 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mascoutah Indians. On the bright side, the eight- run performance marked the Bulldogs' highest-scoring contest to date.

Holly Sexton and Lucy Becker stepped up to the plate in a big way. Sexton went 2-for-4 with one home run and two runs, while Becker went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Gracie Nikonovich was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

As for Mascoutah, the victory (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 14-7. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.7 runs over those games.

On Mascoutah's side, Harper Whitworth and Callie Kunz did most of the damage at the plate: Whitworth went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Kunz went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. Those three runs gave Whitworth a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Bailey Seibert, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Looking ahead, Highland will welcome Belleville West at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Bulldogs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Maroons have averaged an impressive 6.3 runs per game this season. As for Mascoutah, they will square off against Carbondale at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
