Basketball Recap: Broughton Snaps Four-Game Streak of Wins on the Road

Broughton lost against Cardinal Gibbons back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Broughton Capitals received a blow as they fell 53-36 to the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders. The match marked the Capitals' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Despite the defeat, Broughton saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Sam Freeman posted nine points along with seven rebounds and three blocks. Those three blocks gave Freeman a new career-high. Storm Taylor was another key player, putting up nine points.

Cardinal Gibbons' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Cash McSweeney led the charge by dropping a double-double on 17 points and 16 boards. The game was McSweeney's third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Bryce Fitzsimmons, who went 5 for 10 on his way to 13 points.

Broughton's loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-7. As for Cardinal Gibbons, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 12 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 11-6 record this season.

Broughton wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 58-40 defeat against Athens Drive on the 28th. Cardinal Gibbons has also already played their next game, a 74-61 loss against Sanderson on the 28th.
