Orion is a perfect 7-0 against Alleman since August of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Chargers will be taking part in a tournament against the Pioneers at 8:00 a.m. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Orion is headed into the matchup having just posted their closest win since September 9th on Tuesday. They had just enough and edged out Mercer County 2-1. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Chargers.
Orion had a slow start but a hot finish: after dropping the first set, they turned around to win the next two. The final score came out to 19-25, 25-18, 25-21.
Delaney Tapscott had a dynamite game, getting 16 digs and two aces. That's the most aces she has posted since back in September.
They weren't the only good servers: Orion was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 11 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least five aces in eight consecutive matches.
If East Moline United wanted to avenge their loss from the last time they played Alleman, they should've done a better job of containing Megan Hulke. The Pioneers skirted past the Panthers 2-1 thanks in part to Hulke, who had ten digs, seven kills, two blocks, and two aces. She is on a roll when it comes to kills, as she's now had six or more in each of the last four games she's played.
It was an exciting match in which no team won back-to-back sets, but at the end of the day Alleman got the one that really mattered. The match finished with set scores of 25-16, 23-25, 25-22.
Alleman found their leader in sophomore Hulke, who had ten digs, seven kills, two blocks, and two aces. Another player making a difference was Margot Glackin, who had 12 digs and one assist.
Alleman now has a winning record of 9-8. As for Orion, they now have a winning record of 10-9.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Saturday's contest: Orion has really dialed in their serving this season, having averaged 6.7 aces per game. However, it's not like Alleman struggles in that department as they've been averaging 4 aces. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Orion was able to grind out a solid victory over Alleman in their previous matchup back in October of 2021, winning 2-0. Do the Chargers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Pioneers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
