Basketball Recap: Cherryville Takes a Loss

Cherryville was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They received a blow as they fell 55-36 to the North Gaston Wildcats. The Ironmen were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Wildcats earlier this season, when they won 55-42.

When it comes to explaining why Cherryville lost, don't look at Raylei Gidney. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 21 points and 20 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Cherryville smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 26 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as North Gaston only pulled down 15 offensive boards.

Leading North Gaston to victory were Sai White and Ranya Watkins. White went 13 of 22 on her way to 30 points and four steals, while Watkins dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which White has scored at least a third of North Gaston's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Hailey Holmes, who posted six points along with five rebounds and three steals.

Cherryville's loss dropped their record down to 5-7. As for North Gaston, their win ended a 16-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-9.

Cherryville will head out to face off against Burns at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for North Gaston, they will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Stuart W. Cramer at 6:00 p.m. on January 7th. Stuart W. Cramer will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something North Gaston surely won't give up without a fight.
