Basketball Recap: Midway Falls Despite Big Games from Kara Beth Benton and Kyleigh Stonerock

Midway lost against Fairmont back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Midway Raiders lost 57-31 to the Fairmont Golden Tornadoes. While losing is never fun, the Raiders can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 401st, while the Golden Tornadoes are ranked 22nd).

Midway's loss came despite strong showings from Kyleigh Stonerock and Kara Beth Benton. Stonerock posted two points and 13 rebounds, while Benton put up 11 points and six boards.

Even though they lost, Midway smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 13 offensive rebounds in 17 consecutive contests.

It was another big night for Taniya Simms, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 14 rebounds for Fairmont. Simms has been hot, having also posted two or more blocks the last seven times she's played. Aaliyah Duran was another key player, putting up nine points along with five assists and five steals.

Midway has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last nine matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-10 record this season. As for Fairmont, the win was the tenth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 18-1.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Midway will welcome West Bladen at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Midway is facing West Bladen at the right time seeing as West Bladen is stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Fairmont, they will be playing at home against St. Pauls at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
