Basketball Recap: Branden Smith's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Pasquotank County over Northeastern

Pasquotank County was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They were two points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 61-59 heartbreaker at the hands of the Northeastern Eagles. While losing is never fun, the Panthers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 344th, while the Eagles are ranked 77th).

Several Panthers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Branden Smith, who went 7-for-13 to rack up 17 points. Smith is also on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 50% in the last 11 games he's played. Another player making a difference was Jamari Seymore, who went 6-for-12 on his way to 15 points and five rebounds.

Among those leading the charge was Unique Blount, who posted 15 points and seven boards. Those seven rebounds gave him a new career-high. Tyell Saunders was another key player, putting up 16 points.

Pasquotank County's loss dropped their record down to 8-13. As for Northeastern, the win was the tenth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 18-2.

Pasquotank County does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Northeastern, they won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Holmes at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Northeastern's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last 12 contests.
