Football Recap: La Villa Skates Past Marine Military Academy with Ease

The matchup between La Villa and Marine Military Academy on Friday hardly resembled the 24-0 effort from their previous meeting. The Cardinals claimed a resounding 67-35 win over the Leathernecks. The Cardinals haven't had any issues with the Leathernecks recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.

La Villa's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Isaiah Felix, who rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns on only ten carries, and also threw for 118 yards and three TDs. Frankie-Raye Gonzales was another key back, rushing for 151 yards and one score on only 14 carries.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: La Villa was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 422 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 186 rushing yards in three consecutive matchups.

La Villa didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Jacob Rivera and Skyler Perez.

Dash Varner and Brandon Smith certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Varner threw for 325 yards and four touchdowns, while Smith picked up 136 receiving yards and three TDs. Smith was no stranger to the big play, connecting on a big catch that went for 55 yards. A healthy portion of Varner's aerial production (82 yards to be exact) also went to Luke Estell.

La Villa's victory bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Marine Military Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 3-2.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. La Villa will take on Santa Maria at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Cardinals will need to watch out since the Cougars have now posted at least 31 points every time they've taken the field this season. As for Marine Military Academy, they will face off against Woodsboro at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Leathernecks will be up against the Eagles' rather soft defense (which has allowed 34.4 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
