Softball Recap: Portsmouth Has No Trouble Against Burrillville

Portsmouth won the last time they faced Burrillville and things went their way on Friday too. The Patriots blew past the Broncos 17-7. The result was nothing new for the Patriots, who have now won eight games by six runs or more so far this season.

Mia Ruggieri made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). Ruggieri was also big at the plate, getting on base in five of her six plate appearances with two runs and one RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Barbara Rainey, who fired off two home runs, four runs, and four RBI while going 3-for-5. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaylyn Aubuchon, who went 3-for-6 with two RBI.

Portsmouth's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-9. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Burrillville, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Portsmouth will host Toll Gate at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Burrillville, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Lincoln at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The Broncos' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Lions have averaged an impressive 8.3 runs per game this season.
