Baseball Game Preview: Coronado Mustangs vs. Lubbock Westerners

Coronado is 9-1 against Lubbock since April of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Mustangs will be playing at home against the Westerners at 7:00 p.m. Coronado will be looking to extend their current seven-game winning streak.

Coronado is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They never let Caprock get on the board and left with a 17-0 win on Saturday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest victory of the season.

Cooper Shields looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (three).

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Matt Garcia, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and three doubles. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. Zarius Martinez was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-3.

Coronado kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Lubbock got the win against Palo Duro on Saturday by a conclusive 9-2. The win continues a trend for the Westerners in their matchups with the Dons: they've now won four in a row.

Wyatt Brumley was excellent, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.

Coronado pushed their record up to 17-9 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games. As for Lubbock, their victory bumped their record up to 16-10-1.

Tuesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Coronado has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .447. However, it's not like Lubbock struggles in that department as they've averaged .432. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
