Softball Preview: Summerville Bears vs. Hilmar Yellowjackets

The Summerville Bears will head out on the road to square off against the Hilmar Yellowjackets at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Summerville will be strutting in after a victory while Hilmar will be coming in after a loss.

Summerville barely beat Riverbank the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Bears never let the Bruins get on the board and left with a 17-0 win on Thursday. The Bears haven't had any issues with the Bruins recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.

The result came thanks to Madelyn Nikiforuk's shutout, as she gave up just two hits.

On the hitting side, Summerville got a massive performance out of McKenzie Munsel, who went 4-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most RBI Munsel has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Abigail Minick, who went 3-for-5 with four runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

Summerville was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .390. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Riverbank only posted a batting average of .091.

Meanwhile, Hilmar suffered their closest defeat since March 25th on Thursday. They fell just short of Sonora by a score of 8-6. The Yellowjackets have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Sophie Stivers spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and four unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up nine Ks.

At the plate, Camryn Mattos made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Destiny Denys, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Hilmar now has a losing record of 10-11. As for Summerville, their win bumped their record up to 10-12.
