Basketball Game Preview: Wilcox Chargers vs. Los Gatos Wildcats

Wilcox hasn't had much luck against Los Gatos recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Wilcox Chargers will face off against the Los Gatos Wildcats at 7:45 p.m.

Wilcox is headed into the matchup out to prove that what happened against Milpitas on Friday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Wilcox was beaten by Milpitas 73-35. While losing is never fun, the Chargers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 437th, while the Trojans are ranked 105th).

Meanwhile, a well-balanced attack led Los Gatos over Los Altos in every quarter on their way to victory on Wednesday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Los Gatos blew Los Altos out of the water with a 64-26 final score. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Wildcats had established a 25 point advantage.

Los Gatos' win came from a few key players Wilcox will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Zach Otoupal, who went 5 for 10 on his way to 15 points and five steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Scotty Brennan, who posted nine points in addition to six boards and five steals.

Los Gatos smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in six consecutive contests.

Los Gatos pushed their record up to 13-5 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 72.3 points per game. As for Wilcox, their loss dropped their record down to 10-6.

Wilcox took a serious blow against Los Gatos in their previous matchup on January 10th, falling 77-38. That matchup was all but decided by halftime, at which point Wilcox was down 49-15.
