Basketball Recap: Newberry's Luck Changes for the Better on Monday

Newberry's game last Saturday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Monday. They took down the East Gaston Warriors 46-28. Given the Bulldogs' advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 183rd in South Carolina, while the Warriors are ranked 445th in North Carolina), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Despite the loss, East Gaston saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Kayla Maiers posted 17 points. Reagan Lilja was another key player, putting up eight points.

Newberry moved to 4-9 with that victory, which also ended their five-game losing streak. As for East Gaston, they have been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last nine games, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-10 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newberry will challenge Mid-Carolina at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Newberry is facing Mid-Carolina at the right time seeing as Mid-Carolina is stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for East Gaston, they will face off against Bessemer City at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
