Baseball Recap: Mount Michael Benedictine's Run of Five Straight Victories Now Over

Mount Michael Benedictine dropped their record down to 10-11 on Saturday, which also ended the team's five-game streak of wins. They fell 6-2 to the Gross Catholic Cougars. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cougars this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 1-0 back in April.

Mount Michael Benedictine saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Barett Sykora, who went 2-for-3 with one run. Miles Wewel was another, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

As for Gross Catholic, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games.

On Gross Catholic's side, Luke Janovich looked comfortable as he tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Janovich has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than one walk in ten consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Carson Kozeal, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Robbie Brennan, who got on base in two of his three plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

Looking ahead, Mount Michael Benedictine will challenge Ralston at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Gross Catholic, they will take on Skutt Catholic at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday. The SkyHawks are coming into the contest with 11 straight wins at home, so the Cougars will have to stop a squad with plenty of momentum.
