Basketball Recap: Superior Falls Despite Big Games from Colten Butler and Dayne Clark

It was a proper cat-fight when Superior challenged Alma on Saturday. 2025 welcomed the Superior Wildcats with a 60-37 loss courtesy of the Alma Cardinals. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 246th, while the Cardinals are ranked 78th).

Superior's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Dayne Clark, who posted 18 points, and Colten Butler, who put up 12 points along with seven boards and four steals. Butler is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last 17 games he's played dating back to last season. Jaren Gilbert also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

Alma was led to victory by Tucker Biskup and Zavier Mitchell. Biskup dropped a double-double on 27 points and ten rebounds, while Mitchell went 7 of 10 on his way to 21 points and six boards. Those ten rebounds gave Biskup a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Isaiah Neal, who had six points and eight boards.

Superior is on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-7. As for Alma, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-1.

Superior has already played their next matchup, a 48-23 loss against Thayer Central on the 10th. As for Alma, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 69-27 win against Northern Valley on the 7th.
