Basketball Recap: Kirkwood Gets Big Victory over Higher-Ranked Hazelwood Central

After losing to Hazelwood Central the last time they met, Kirkwood decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Kirkwood Pioneers secured a 57-51 W over the Hazelwood Central Hawks on Friday. The victory was all the more spectacular given the Pioneers' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Missouri basketball rankings (they are ranked 262nd, while the Hawks are ranked 100th).

The win made it two in a row for Kirkwood and bumps their season record up to 8-11. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.5 points over those games. As for Hazelwood Central, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost six of their last eight games, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-9 record this season.

Looking ahead, Kirkwood will square off against McCluer at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Hazelwood Central, they will face off against Hazelwood East at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Hazelwood East knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past nine matchups -- so hopefully Hazelwood Central likes a good challenge.
