Basketball Recap: Cardinal Newman Snaps Four-Game Streak of Wins at Home

On Monday, the Cardinal Newman Cardinals ended up a good deal behind the Indian Land Warriors and lost 49-32.

When it comes to explaining why Cardinal Newman lost, don't look at Zaria Thompson. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 17 points and 14 rebounds. The matchup was Thompson's third in a row with at least ten points.

Even though they lost, Cardinal Newman smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 16 offensive boards in three consecutive games.

Variellis Vega- Soto was the offensive standout of the contest as she went 6 of 12 on her way to 15 points along with five assists and three steals. She has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ava Pensule, who posted nine points and six boards.

Cardinal Newman's loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 2-4. As for Indian Land, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-4.

Cardinal Newman will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Lake Marion at 3:15 p.m. on December 27th. Indian Land and York will compete for holiday cheer at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
