Softball Recap: Utica Takes a Loss

Utica extended their losing streak to four on Saturday, dropping their season record down to 7-12 in the process. They fell 10-7 to the Lakewood Lancers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Lancers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 6-5 back in April.

As for Lakewood, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 18-4. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games.

For Lakewood's part, Ashlyn Carder spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered seven earned runs on ten hits and racked up seven Ks. Carder has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Carly Williams, who went 3-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Another player making a difference was Averie Adams, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Utica will face off against Newark Catholic at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Lakewood, they will square off against Danville at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
