Basketball Recap: South Stanly Comes Up Short

South Stanly was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their 32nd straight defeat dating back to last season. They were outmatched by the Union Academy Cardinals and fell 67-18. While losing is never fun, the Rowdy Rebel Bulls can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 595th, while the Cardinals are ranked 150th).

Briley Page was South Stanly's leading scorer, having posted eight points. Mya McCray held things down on the boards with five rebounds. Kanija Colson took the lead distributing the ball, coming up with two assists.

Union Academy's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Kayl Starnes, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine assists. Starnes is also crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Paisley Boatright was another key player, dropping a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds.

South Stanly's loss dropped their record down to 0-11. As for Union Academy, the victory keeps them at an undefeated 13-0.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. South Stanly will venture away from home to square off against Southwestern Randolph at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Southwestern Randolph will roll in looking for their 16th straight win, something South Stanly surely won't give up without a fight. As for Union Academy, a feisty cat fight is on tap when the Union Academy Cardinals face off against the Mount Pleasant Tigers at 6:00 p.m. on January 24th.
