Basketball Recap: Hali Pershing's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Southwood over Maconaquah

Southwood was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They took a 59-52 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Maconaquah Braves. While the Knights didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Braves 15-11 in the first quarter.

Southwood lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Hali Pershing, who posted 15 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals. That's the most points Pershing has posted since back in November of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Lola Winer, who went 5 for 12 en route to 11 points and six assists.

Even though they lost, Southwood smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in six consecutive matchups.

Leading Maconaquah to victory were Delaney Betzner and Addie Maiben. Betzner went 9 of 18 on her way to 26 points and five boards, while Maiben went 5 for 9 en route to 17 points. The contest was Betzner's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Averie Maiben also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Southwood's record now sits at 5-14. As for Maconaquah, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 12-6.

Southwood will look to defend their home court on Saturday against Lewis Cass at 7:30 p.m. Maconaquah has already played their next game (against Whitko), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
