Baseball Recap: Smithfield-Selma Drops Season-High Score on Southeast Raleigh

Smithfield-Selma scored the most runs they've had this season on Saturday, but it wasn't enough. They fell 12-8 to the Southeast Raleigh Bulldogs. The loss leaves the Spartans still looking for their first win of the season.

Andrew Hartman was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he struck out six batters over 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits (and only one walk). What's more, he gave up only one walk, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Cayden Gregory was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Jake McLain, who scored a run while going 1-for-1.

Smithfield-Selma's record now sits at 0-10. As for Southeast Raleigh, they moved to 3-7 with that victory, which also ended their three-game losing streak.

Looking ahead, Smithfield-Selma will be playing at home against Southern Wayne at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Smithfield-Selma is facing Southern Wayne at the right time seeing as Southern Wayne is stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Southeast Raleigh, they will head out to face off against Fuquay - Varina at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Fuquay - Varina's pitching crew has only allowed 3.2 runs per game this season, so Southeast Raleigh's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
