Basketball Recap: Jabin Barnes' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Yorktown over Mt. Vernon

Yorktown lost against Mt. Vernon back in February of 2024, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Yorktown Tigers took a 51-38 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mt. Vernon Marauders. While losing is never fun, the Tigers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 220th, while the Marauders are ranked seventh).

Yorktown lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Jabin Barnes, who went 5-for-9 en route to 13 points and seven boards. He is also on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as he's posted one of at least 56% in the last four games he's played. Nate Tyler was another key player, putting up 12 points.

Luke Ertel continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Mt. Vernon, posting 20 points and six rebounds. That makes it six consecutive games in which Ertel has scored at least a third of Mt. Vernon's points. Another player making a difference was Tyler Davis, who shot 63% from the field to rack up 10 points and eight boards.

This is the second loss in a row for Yorktown and nudges their season record down to 6-16. As for Mt. Vernon, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season.

Yorktown and Mt. Vernon are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Yorktown will face off against Jay County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Mt. Vernon, they will take on Richmond at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Mt. Vernon will be up against Richmond's rather soft defense (which has allowed 59.71 points per match), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
