Basketball Recap: Animas Takes a Loss

Animas was the 39-26 winner over Lordsburg when they last played one another back in December of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Animas Panthers were just a bucket shy of victory on Saturday and fell 55-54 to the Lordsburg Mavericks.

Animas' defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Camila Nevarez, who posted 13 points in addition to five boards and four steals, and Journey Sheehan, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds. The dominant performance gave Nevarez a new career-high in points. Laikyn Davenport was another key player, putting up 13 points and seven boards.

Even though they lost, Animas was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Animas' loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 7-7. As for Lordsburg, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-8.

Animas will challenge Magdalena at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Magdalena is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.2 points per game this season. Lordsburg has already played their next match (against Capitan), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
