Softball Recap: Wharton's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Thursday

Wharton dropped their record down to 11-10 on Thursday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They fell 4-1 to the Steinbrenner Warriors. The Wildcats were red-hot at the plate heading into the game (they scored no less than ten runs in the three contests prior), but the Warriors' pitcher proved too tough.

Eliza Connell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on four hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 16 consecutive appearances.

As for Steinbrenner, their victory was their seventh straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 17-6. The win continues a trend for them in their matchups with Wharton: they've now won four in a row.

On Steinbrenner's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Lilly Patton gave up a run (which was unearned) on two hits and racked up seven Ks.

At the plate, Jenna Fortenberry was incredible, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two RBI. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March. Callie Bergen was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Wharton will head out to take on Gaither at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. The Wildcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cowboys have averaged an impressive 6.8 runs per game this season. As for Steinbrenner, they will venture away from home to face off against Bloomingdale at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
