Basketball Game Preview: Gibault Catholic Hawks vs. East Alton-Wood River Oilers

The Gibault Catholic Hawks will face off against the East Alton-Wood River Oilers at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Gibault Catholic will be strutting in after a win while East Alton-Wood River will be coming in after a defeat.

Gibault Catholic took a loss when they played away from home two weeks ago, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They were the clear victor by a 37-13 margin over Metro-East Lutheran. The Hawks have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five games by 21 points or more this season.

Gibault Catholic's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Kamille Grohmann, who almost dropped a double-double on nine boards and nine assists, and Karmon Grohmann, who almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine boards. The dominant performance also gave Karmon a new career-high in blocks (four). Another player making a difference was Hope Chambers, who posted three points and nine rebounds.

Meanwhile, East Alton-Wood River had to suffer through a 74-29 loss at the hands of Breese Central. The Oilers haven't had much luck with the Cougars recently, as the team's come up short the last six times they've met.

East Alton-Wood River's loss dropped their record down to 6-13. As for Gibault Catholic, their victory bumped their record up to 10-6.

Gibault Catholic came up short against East Alton-Wood River in their previous matchup back in January of 2024, falling 56-52. Can Gibault Catholic avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
